Four routes that actually work
Worked shapes for three, five and seven days, plus the classic Boston weekend. Every drive time is realistic rather than optimistic.
The White Mountains weekend
One hotel in Lincoln, three days of driving that never exceeds 45 minutes to a trailhead. The most efficient version of a first New Hampshire trip.
-
Franconia Notch
Arrive by mid-morning. Flume Gorge on a timed ticket (allow 2 hours), then the Basin and a short walk on the Pemi Trail. Afternoon: Cannon Mountain tramway for the ridge view. Evening in Lincoln.
-
Mount Washington
Cog Railway or Auto Road to the summit. Allow three hours for the railway. Bring a windproof layer — the summit will be 20–30°F colder. On the way back, stop at the Omni Mount Washington Hotel porch.
-
Kancamagus Highway east
Drive Route 112 west to east with stops at Sabbaday Falls, Rocky Gorge and the pass viewpoint. End in North Conway for lunch and a short outlet stop, then head home.
Booking notes
Book Flume Gorge and the Cog Railway in advance. In October, book the hotel by July. Lincoln has the most lodging choice at the western end; North Conway at the eastern end.

- Total driving, day 3~2 hrs

Mountains and lakes
Three nights in the White Mountains, two on Winnipesaukee. The shape most first-time visitors end up wishing they had booked.
-
Franconia Notch and the western Whites
Flume Gorge, the Basin, Cannon tramway. Day two for a proper hike — Lonesome Lake for a gentler option, Franconia Ridge if you are experienced and the weather is settled.
-
Mount Washington
Summit by rail or road, then a short walk on the Alpine Garden if conditions allow. Overnight in North Conway.
-
Kancamagus to the lakes
Route 112 west to east with stops, lunch in Conway, then west on Route 25 to Meredith. Two nights on the lake.
-
Winnipesaukee and home
Morning mailboat or a short cruise, a swim at Ellacoya, then an easy drive south.
Why it works
You see the state's two signature landscapes without ever driving more than 90 minutes in a day, and the second base gives the trip a change of pace rather than a change of scenery only.

- Best monthsJun–Oct

The grand loop
A full circuit: mountains, the Great North Woods, the lakes and the coast. Ambitious, but it covers the state's range without ever feeling rushed.
Franconia Notch
Flume Gorge, the Basin, Cannon tramway, and a half-day hike of your choice. Base in Lincoln.
Mount Washington
Cog Railway or Auto Road, then Crawford Notch and the Mount Washington Hotel porch. Overnight North Conway.
Pinkham and Crawford notches
Tuckerman Ravine trailhead walk, Glen Ellis Falls, Arethusa Falls. A slower day with short walks rather than a summit push.
Great North Woods
North on Route 16 and 26 to Errol, then Route 3 to Pittsburg. Magalloway fire tower and a dusk moose drive. Overnight Colebrook or Pittsburg.
South to the lakes
Down Route 3 through Colebrook to Lancaster, then Route 116 or 25 to Meredith. Afternoon on Winnipesaukee.
Lakes to Seacoast
Morning swim or a short cruise, then Route 4 and I-95 east to Portsmouth. Afternoon at Strawbery Banke or the waterfront, and out.
Honest caveat
Day 5 involves the longest single drive (about 2 hours 30 from North Conway to Pittsburg). If that sounds like too much, drop the Great North Woods and give the extra day to the Lakes Region or the Seacoast instead.

Weekend getaway from Boston
Two versions, depending on whether you want mountains or coast. Both work as a Friday-night departure.
Version A: mountains
Drive to Lincoln
Two hours from Boston via I-93. Arrive late, sleep.
Franconia Notch and a summit
Flume Gorge in the morning, Cannon tramway or a hike in the afternoon. Dinner in Lincoln.
Kancamagus and home
Route 112 east with stops at Sabbaday and Rocky Gorge, lunch in Conway, then home via I-93 or Route 16.
Version B: coast
Drive to Portsmouth
One hour. Dinner in town with a reservation.
History and harbour
Strawbery Banke in the morning, Prescott Park and the North End in the afternoon, harbour cruise or a walk to the lighthouse.
Coast road and beach
Route 1A south through Rye and New Castle, Odiorne Point, then Hampton Beach before heading home.
Boston weekend tips
- Leave Friday after 7pm to avoid I-93 northbound traffic.
- Sunday afternoon southbound on I-93 is slow from 3pm — leave earlier or later.
- Portsmouth is reachable by train, so Version B works without a car if you stay central.
Tailoring a route
Swap summits for water
Replace the Franconia Ridge day with Story Land or a lake beach. Keep days short and build in a pool or swim stop every afternoon.
Reverse the direction
Drive the Kancamagus west to east in the morning so the sun is behind you and the colour is lit. Book lodging by July.
One mountain, not four
Pick a single ski area and stay at its base. Road time in winter is slower and daylight is short — do not plan to tour.
Itinerary questions
What is a good 3-day itinerary?
Base in Lincoln: Franconia Notch on day one, Mount Washington on day two, the Kancamagus Highway east to Conway on day three. One hotel, no repacking, and all the signature sights covered.
How many days for a full road trip?
Five days for two regions, seven for a full loop. Three days is enough for one region done properly, and trying to do more just means more driving.
Can I do this without a car?
Only the Boston weekend Version B, which is Portsmouth-based and reachable by train. Everything else requires a car — see the getting here section.
Where should I stay on a five-day trip?
Three nights in Lincoln or North Conway and two in Meredith. That gives you the mountains and the lakes without a long final drive home.
